FX has issued a statement following The League star Steve Rannazzisi admitting he lied about narrowly escaping the 9/11 terror attacks.

“We are disappointed to learn that Steve Rannazzisi lied about being in the World Trade Center on 9/11. It is upsetting that he would fabricate a story about having survived that horrible tragedy. It is also unfortunate that he did not admit to the truth sooner.  That said we believe Steve is sincere in his apology and will do everything he can to make amends moving forward.”

FX will continue to air the seventh and final season of The League tonight as planned. At this point 11 of the final 13 episodes have been produced and production will continue through October.

The response comes on the heels of the comedian confession Wednesday that his long-maintained dramatic anecdote about working in the World Trade Center when planes struck the towers was inaccurate. “As a young man, I made a mistake that I deeply regret and for which apologies may still not be enough,” Rannazzisi wrote. “I don’t know why I said this. This was inexcusable. I am truly, truly sorry … For many years, more than anything, I have wished that, with silence, I could somehow erase a story told by an immature young man. It only made me more ashamed.”

Rannazzisi’s statement was prompted by the New York Timesreport investigating his tale.

Comedy Central also issued a statement about its relationship with Rannazzisi, who has a stand-up special scheduled for Saturday night: “We just learned about this last night. We are very disappointed to hear about Steve’s misrepresentations and are currently determining how we will move forward.”

Rannazzisi had a 2013 special on Comedy Central called Steve Rannazzisi: Manchild. His one-hour special currently planned for this week is called Breaking Dad.
